Produced in only a few hundred examples between approximately 1970 and 1974, exclusively in steel, the Patek Philippe reference 3574, often nicknamed “Calatrava Tonneau”, perfectly combines mechanical quality, timeless elegance and stylistic avant-gardism from the most prestigious Swiss manufacturer.
Our example, which has just passed through the brand's workshops for a complete service, presents a superb satin-finish blue dial and guilloché white gold markers and hands, reminiscent of the Clous de Paris.
Extremely rare, poorly documented, and today highly sought-after, this reference stands out from the usual Patek Philippe designs and, in some ways, lays the foundations for the icons that will come later on: the Nautilus and Aquanaut collections, which will also feature all-steel cases and blue dials.

Detailed description

Reference 3574 was presented in 1970, several years before the appearance of the first Nautilus.

Produced in only a few hundred examples between approximately 1970 and 1974, exclusively in steel, this model perfectly combines the timeless elegance of Patek Philippe and the sportiness of this era's designs

Three dials were produced for reference 3574A: silver with white gold markers and black insert, silver with Calatrava tapestry pattern, and, the most desirable version: satin blue dial with guilloché white gold markers and hands, reminiscent of the Clous de Paris.

Extremely rare, poorly documented, and today highly sought-after, this reference stands out from the usual Patek Philippe designs and, in some ways, lays the foundations for the icons that will come later on: the Nautilus and Aquanaut collections, which will also feature all-steel cases and blue dials.

The superb barrel-shaped case with screwed back measures 35 mm in diameter and 40 mm from lug to lug, is very thin, and houses a mechanical hand-wound movement bearing the Geneva Hallmark, attesting to its high build quality and exquisite finishing, as well as remarkable chronometric performance.

Nothing in Patek Philippe's current collections resembles this thin, dressy-and-sporty watch, while being perfectly suited to regular wear thanks to its case material, the color of its dial, and its discretion. Today that shape watches are sought after by discerning collectors and new entrants into the world of vintage watches, we are proud to present this exceptional example, which we have also had completely serviced by the watchmakers at Patek Philippe in Geneva.

At most a few dozen Patek Philippe 3574s have appeared on the market since the model's introduction over 50 years ago. Presented here in its most desirable configuration, our example is a rare opportunity for the lover of high-quality collectible watches with off-the-beaten-path design.

Condition

This 3574 is presented in excellent overall condition.
The steel case, recently lightly polished in the Patek Philippe workshops in Geneva while respecting the original finishes and proportions, presents clear alternating matte/satin and mirror-polished surfaces.
The case back has no significant dents or scratches.
The steel winding crown is in perfect condition.
The superb satin blue dial, its patterned white gold indexes and hands are perfectly preserved, without stains, discolorations or scratches.
The stainless steel pin buckle, signed Patek Philippe, is brand new, as is the matte black alligator strap.
