This Rolex Datejust reference 16030 produced (serial number R51xxxx) and sold in 1988 features one of the most sought-after dials of its period: the bright white version, nicknamed the “Porcelain Dial” by the collecting community due to its texture, luminance, and the way the black inscriptions appear to “float” on the glossy white surface. This configuration is particularly sought after by collectors.
The 36 mm steel case, with its characteristic crenellated steel bezel, houses the Rolex automatic caliber 3035, a robust, reliable, and precise movement, chronometer-certified by the COSC and equipped with a quick-change date function.
The example we are offering is distinguished by its excellent condition, as well as by the presence, almost 40 years after its initial sale, of the original Rolex punched warranty document recording an initial sale on July 22, 1988 in Honolulu, Hawaii (United States).
The original Rolex Oyster bracelet, reference 78360 with 558 attachments and clasp code L8 indicating production in August 1987 harmoniously completes the watch.
Finally, this Datejust 16030 “Porcelain” has undergone a complete overhaul by a watchmaker specializing in vintage calibers.

Detailed description

If there were only one watch left, it would be a Rolex Datejust.

Since its creation in 1945, the Datejust has embodied the pinnacle of functionality and style in the world of luxury watches. This collection encapsulates the essence of Rolex's technical innovations and stylistic identity: a water-resistant steel Oyster case, a screw-down crown, a reliable and precise automatic movement, a legible dial, and an instantaneous date window at 3 o'clock, made accessible at a glance by the Cyclops, a magnifying glass affixed to the crystal, patented in the early 1950s.

We present here an excellent example of the reference 16030. Featuring a crenellated bezel and a solid steel Oyster bracelet, this watch has a very beautiful and elegant white dial with applied baton markers and white gold hands. Its brilliant white face is nicknamed the "Porcelain Dial" due to its texture, its luminance, and the way in which the black inscriptions seem to "float" on the glossy white surface. This configuration is particularly popular with collectors.

This watch is powered by the famous Rolex 3035 self-winding mechanical caliber, which is extremely reliable.

Our entirely original steel Rolex Datejust reference 16030 is presented in superb aesthetic and mechanical condition, with a dial free of any defects, a case with particularly sharp edges, a bezel with defined facets and a taut bracelet. Its movement has recently undergone a complete mechanical overhaul by a qualified watchmaker to ensure its perfect functioning for many years to come.

Condition

This Datejust reference 16030 is preserved in excellent overall condition.
The demarcations between the satin/brushed matte and glossy/mirror polished surfaces are clear.
The crenellated steel bezel, characteristic of the reference 16030, is perfect and has well-defined facets.
The attractive and sought-after bright white dial, known as the "Porcelain" variant amongst collectors, is in excellent condition, and all the dots of luminescent material (tritium base) at the tips of the indexes are present and whole, and have developed, just like the tritium present on the hands, a light vanilla patina.
The movement that powers our Datejust, a self-winding mechanical Rolex caliber 3035, has recently undergone a complete overhaul by a watchmaker specializing in vintage models, and operates according to the strictest tolerances.
The original Rolex punched warranty document recording an initial sale on July 22, 1988 in Honolulu, Hawaii (USA) is perfectly preserved.
A very nice example!

The Rolex Datejust: A Heritage of Innovation and Elegance

Introduced in 1945 to mark Rolex's 40th anniversary, the Datejust was the first automatic watch to feature a date window that “jumped” instantly at midnight. This innovation, as so often in Rolex history, transformed the watch industry and set a new standard for convenience and functionality.

Over the decades, the Datejust has benefited from various improvements while retaining its characteristic appearance and pioneering spirit. With its instantly recognizable date window, enlarged by a Cyclops magnifier patented in the 1950s, the Datejust combines practicality and prestige, making it one of the most versatile and celebrated models in the Rolex family.

The universal appeal of the Datejust lies in the diversity of its executions and their timelessness – available in a multitude of sizes, materials and dial configurations, each piece offers something unique while respecting Rolex's stylistic canons and rigorous technical standards. Whether crafted in stainless steel or in precious metals, featuring simple markers or elaborate diamond settings, each Datejust is designed to stand the test of time, both in terms of style and of mechanical reliability.

Rolex has continually adapted the collection to meet the evolving tastes of its clientele, notably by introducing the Datejust II and Datejust 41 models, which are larger and heavier than the references produced to date.

The Datejust is not just a watch; it's a piece of heritage that has graced the wrists of the world's greatest leaders, visionaries, artists and celebrities, making it a symbol of success and achievement across generations. Let's only name a few of its wearers: Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr, the Dalai Lama, Roger Federer, Jennifer Aniston, Paul Newman, Michael Jordan, Bill Clinton, Tom Cruise, Rihanna, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, Jacques Chirac, Pope John Paul II, and even Mao Zedong!

Today, the Rolex Datejust, a true “blue chip watch” with timeless style, is the ideal entry point for anyone wishing to discover the world of vintage watch collecting, while still being wearable on a daily basis.
