Launched in 1948, the Omega Seamaster continued the legacy of military watches delivered to the Royal Navy during World War II, adapting it for versatile civilian use. Four years later, in 1952, the Biel-based manufacture took a decisive step forward with the reference 2627: it was the very first Seamaster to feature a calendar window. While Rolex had led the way with the Datejust in 1945, this was the first time Omega had combined an automatic movement, guaranteed water resistance, and a date display in a single watch.
The example we are presenting belongs to this very first generation, produced in 1952. The silver-cream dial, superbly patinated over time, offers a warm and uniform hue, enhanced by luminous lapidated indexes and Dauphine hands, characteristic of the period.
Its 35.5 mm steel case, with faceted lugs, is distinguished by its wonderful state of preservation: it has likely never been polished since its birth over  70 years ago, retaining clean edges and a great presence on the wrist. At the heart of the watch beats the Omega 353 “bumper” caliber, an evolution of the 351, recognizable by its semi-rotating rotor damped by spring stops — robust and reliable, it foreshadows the arrival of future movements equipped with central rotors.
Between its historical significance, the charm of a patinated radium dial and the rarity of a perfectly preserved first generation example, this Seamaster Calendar 2627 represents an opportunity for the discerning collector.

Detailed description

In 1948, Omega launched the Seamaster collection, inspired by the service watches supplied to the British Royal Navy at the end of World War II. With its O-rings ensuring water resistance, it quickly became a model of versatility, capable of accompanying its owner in both elegant settings and more utilitarian contexts. The Seamaster would go on to become the most enduring line in Omega's history.

In 1952, the Biel-based manufacture took a decisive step forward with the introduction of the reference 2627, the first Seamaster to feature a calendar complication. While the Rolex Datejust had paved the way in 1945, this was the first time that Omega had offered a waterproof automatic watch with a calendar window—a combination that would become a standard in luxury watchmaking for decades to come.

The Seamaster Calendar ref. 2627 comes in a 35.5 mm case in steel or 14-carat gold-plated steel, with faceted lugs, retaining classic but already modern proportions for the time. The case, never polished since this watch's birth over 70 years ago and therefore retaining remarkably sharp angles, gives our example a very beautiful presence on the wrist. It is topped with a domed plexiglas crystal and a crown signed Omega. The date window, here square, marks the very first generation: Omega would adopt the trapezoidal shape in 1953.

The example we are presenting, whose movement serial number hints at production in 1952, is one of the very first Seamaster Calendars ever produced. Its perfectly uniform silver-cream dial has developed a superb warm patina, enhanced by faceted radium indexes and Dauphine hands. The date appears elegantly framed at 6 o'clock, offering a visual balance specific to this founding reference.

Beneath the dial beats the bumper caliber 353, an evolution of the Omega 351, recognizable by its rotor performing a partial back-and-forth movement stopped by springs. A legacy of a 1920s design, this robust and precise movement marks a key step in Omega's transition to future automatic movements equipped with a central rotor.

With its remarkably well-preserved steel case, which has never been polished since its birth over 70 years ago, its dial with its intact vintage charm and its historical importance, this very first-generation Seamaster Calendar will appeal to collectors looking for a perfect example of this reference, a milestone in Omega's history.

Condition

This 1st generation Omega Seamaster Calendar reference 2627-5 SC produced in 1952 is preserved in superb overall condition.
The steel case retains wide lugs with particularly sharp facets, having probably never been polished since its birth more than 70 years ago. The case back is in perfect condition.
The winding crown features the Ω logo as expected.
The superb original dial has developed a warm and even patina, imaginable only on watches whose luminescent material is made of radium. The indexes are magnificent. The luminescent material of the Dauphine hands may have been the subject of an old restoration during the life of the watch. The date disc is original and features a typography characteristic of the model.
The self-winding mechanical movement, Omega caliber 353 with bumpers, has been fully overhauled by one of our watchmakers specializing in vintage calibers and operates to the strictest tolerances.
The Made in France strap in Gold grained calfskin is new, and completed with a steel pin buckle.
