Detailed description

The 1675 is the “queen” reference of the GMT-Master. In continuous production from approximately 1959 to 1980, its variations reside mainly in subtle changes to the dial.

The first 1675 dials are nicknamed “lacquered” or “Gilt” by collectors. The latter, when well preserved, are deep black and reflect light due to a layer of varnish applied during the manufacturing process. Within the great diversity of lacquered dials that have been mounted on the reference 1675, the community of specialists has, over the years, managed to distinguish 7 main versions, separated into 2 categories: Chapter Ring and Non Chapter Ring. The models equipped with the Chapter Ring are the rarest and most sought-after. Our example comes with a Chapter Ring dial further known as “Type 3”, with all of its inscriptions in gold color, in subtle depth compared to the base surface.

Furthermore, the dial of this watch has a small dot of luminescent material, nicknamed "Exclamation Point", under the 6 o'clock index. Placed on the 30th minute graduation, this point makes our example particularly desirable: this subtle feature was applied by Rolex to indicate the presence of less radioactive luminescent material than what was previously used for the markers and hands. Present only on watches from 1961, 1962 and 1963, “Exclamation Points” are highly sought-after by astute collectors. Our watch, with its serial number starting with 875 (production in 1963), fits perfectly into the range experts recognize (620xxx to 990xxx).

The steel case also has a desirable feature: the “Pointed Crown Guards”, or “Cornino” as the Italians call them. This particular shape of the crown guards at 3 o'clock is characteristic of professional Rolex models from the early 1960s, and was subsequently abandoned in favor of round crown guards, that Rolex still uses today.

This watch is powered by a mechanical self-winding movement, Rolex caliber 1565, certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute. The rotor is nicknamed ‘butterfly’ because of its openwork pattern around the golden Rolex crown. The highly reliable movement inside our watch has been entirely overhauled by one of our watchmakers, and operates within the strictest tolerances.

The 2 main elements to consider when acquiring a professional Rolex from the 1960s is the condition of all the parts that make it up – and particularly the dial – as well as their authenticity. Today we are pleased to present an extremely attractive example. The luminous material of the dial and hands is original and has not been subject to any restoration, as is the shiny lacquer deposited on the black dial. The combination of parts is consistent with the specific features expected of a watch with this serial number: case with Pointed Crown Guards, small red GMT hand, Type 3 dial with Exclamation Point, Jubilee 6251H bracelet and 55 end links, case back stamped with the reference 1675 and dated 1.61, silver date disc with open 9s. The rare black bezel insert has turned to a very beautiful anthracite gray.

This GMT-Master is not just a watch, it is a piece of Rolex history, offering its wearer a touch of timeless elegance and a lasting investment. Ideal for discerning collectors and vintage watch enthusiasts, it represents a rare opportunity to own a piece of Rolex history in its purest state, while still being wearable on a daily basis.

The Rolex GMT-Master: Combining Innovation, Sportiness and the Elegance of Travel

Introduced in 1954, the Rolex GMT-Master was the result of a collaboration between Rolex and Pan American World Airways, one of the leading airlines of the time. It was designed to meet the needs of airline pilots who, with the rise of transcontinental air travel, needed a watch capable of managing several time zones simultaneously. This emblematic model quickly gained in popularity, not only among aviators, but also among travellers and professionals around the world.

Its innovative multi-time-zone display is achieved by an additional 24-hour hand that completes one revolution of the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a 24-hour graduated rotating bezel. This feature allows users to simultaneously read the time in two different time zones – and even, in the case of the most modern models, in three.

Over the decades, the GMT-Master has undergone numerous evolutions, both technical and stylistic. The introduction of the GMT-Master II in 1983 marked the advent of the ability to set the hour hand independently of the 24-hour hand. This function further enhanced the watch's versatility, allowing GMT wearers to easily consult the time in three time zones.

Aesthetically, the GMT-Master is famous for its coloured bezels, the most celebrated being the ‘Pepsi’ (blue and red), the ‘Coke’ (red and black) and the ‘Batman’ (blue and black), which are not only practical but also highly attractive. These bold designs, combined with Rolex's robustness and reliability, have made the GMT-Master a must-have in the world of prestige and collector's watches.

Technically, the GMT-Master has always been equipped with high-precision self-winding mechanical movements and is designed to withstand the pressures of frequent air travel.

The main differences between the GMT-Master references (I and II) concern the glass (plexiglass or sapphire), the setting of the 24-hour hand (independent or not), the type of dial (lacquered, matte or shiny with hour markers surrounded by white gold) and the material of the case, bezel and bracelet (stainless steel, all-gold, gold and steel). The main references for steel are, in the order of their introduction: 6542, 1675, 16750, 16700, 16760, 16710, 116710, and 126710.

Today, the Rolex GMT-Master remains one of the most sought-after and respected watches in the world, symbolising adventure and prestige. It has also been worn by many influential personalities and celebrities over the years, contributing greatly to its iconic status. These include Che Guevara, Howard Hughes, Tom Selleck, Marlon Brando, Clint Eastwood, John Travolta and Pablo Picasso. Today, it continues to appeal to new generations of international professionals and urban explorers, remaining a benchmark in traveller's watches, with a rich history and unrivalled functionality.
