Produced circa 1971, this 18-carat yellow gold Cartier Tank “Louis” illustrates a pivotal period in the history of the house, at the transition between Parisian heritage and the arrival of more structured production in the early 1970s. Its 20 x 28 mm case is remarkably preserved, with sharp edges, original finishes intact and perfectly legible hallmarks, including the eagle's head and the Cartier “SCA” master hallmark attesting to French manufacture.
The white dial is entirely original, unrestored – a rarity for a Cartier of this era – and retains remarkable luminosity, with the "PARIS" inscription perfectly preserved. The broad blued hands, combined with a beaded crown set with an oversized blue cabochon and a faceted crystal, give this Tank a very assertive vintage presence.
The watch is powered by a high-quality, hand-wound mechanical movement, signed Cartier and adjusted to several temperatures and positions, most likely supplied by European Watch & Clock Co. Complete with its original 18-carat gold Cartier folding clasp, and recently serviced, this Tank Louis stands out as a prime example, destined for the collector seeking an elegant, cohesive, and distinctive Cartier timepiece.

Detailed description

This Cartier Tank “Louis” in yellow gold, produced circa 1971, falls within one of the most interesting periods in Cartier's watchmaking history: that of the transition between a historically Parisian and artisanal manufacturing, and the shift to a more industrial era with the relocation of production to Switzerland and the arrival of the Louis Cartier collection in 1973 which, for the first time, allowed Cartier to offer a well-defined catalogue of 12 models.

The 18-carat yellow gold case (20 x 28 mm) is remarkably well-preserved. It retains its elegant proportions and original finishes, with crisp edges. All hallmarks are perfectly legible: the French eagle's head hallmark, the maker's mark "SCA" (Cartier) in a lozenge (French manufacture), as well as the consistent internal markings, including the last three digits of the serial number inscribed inside the case back, also stamped inside the mid-case. The excellent condition of the screw heads securing the case confirms that the watch has been opened very little and carefully preserved since its manufacture more than 55 years ago.

The white dial is entirely original, without any restoration or reprinting—a particularly rare feature for a Cartier of this period. Its surface is luminous, free of cracks or distracting flaws, and the "PARIS" inscription at 6 o'clock is perfectly preserved. The black printing displays the characteristic texture and relief of Cartier dials from that era. The blued hands are particularly wide on this model from the early 1970s, and, combined with a large-diameter beaded crown set with a blue cabochon, give this Tank a very pronounced vintage presence and personality. The faceted crystal catches the light and enhances the overall jewelry-like and antique character.

Inside, the watch is powered by a high-quality, hand-wound mechanical movement, most likely supplied by European Watch & Clock Co., a long-standing partner of Cartier, in association with Jaeger-LeCoultre. This richly decorated caliber, signed Cartier, is adjusted to several temperatures and positions – a specification reserved for top-of-the-range movements. Its architecture and level of finishing suggest that it could be, as already identified by Cartier enthusiasts, a caliber already used in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. It bears witness to a still relatively artisanal watchmaking style, one that has disappeared from modern production.

The watch comes with its original 18-carat gold Cartier folding clasp, perfectly preserved with all its hallmarks and engravings, as well as a custom-made Cartier leather strap. A replacement strap can, of course, be provided upon request by the next owner.

Recently serviced by an experienced watchmaker, this Tank Louis stands out as a prime example, combining the iconic aesthetic of one of the first wristwatches in history, a fine mechanical movement, and remarkable condition. An ideal piece for the discerning collector seeking an elegant, cohesive, and distinctive Cartier timepiece.

Condition

This Cartier Tank Louis is preserved in excellent overall condition.
The 18-carat yellow gold case, measuring 20 x 28 mm, retains its original proportions and finishes. All hallmarks, both on the left side of the case and on the case back, are perfectly visible, deep, and crisp. Inside the case, the last three digits are correctly inscribed on the inside of the case back. It is noteworthy that all the screw heads securing the case are in excellent condition – attesting to the fact that this watch has been worn and opened very little since its initial sale more than 50 years ago.
The white dial is original and, unusually for Cartier wristwatches of this period, has never been restored or reprinted. Its surface is a brilliant white, free of any distracting cracks or scratches. The "PARIS" inscription at 6 o'clock is perfectly preserved.
The faceted glass is very well preserved, and contributes to the vintage charm of this Tank.
The beaded winding crown, set with an oversized blue cabochon, is in excellent condition.
The original 18-carat yellow gold Cartier folding clasp is in excellent condition. It retains all of its original hallmarks and engravings, including the characteristic stock number, perfectly corresponding to the watch's era.
The burgundy lizard leather strap is signed Cartier, has been worn, and can be replaced upon request by the next owner.
A very high-quality example for those looking for a Tank Louis that's off the beaten track!
