We are pleased to offer this superb Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 3520 in 18-carat yellow gold, in remarkable condition, accompanied by its original Certificate of Identity and Guarantee, its red box and its black crocodile strap with yellow gold pin buckle – a true, ideal “Full Set”.
Reference 3520 is the one that introduced, in 1965, the Clous de Paris bezel, which went on to become one of the most emblematic visual codes of the Calatrava collection. Presented at the time as “the thinnest water-resistant watch in the world”, it owed this to its caliber 175, an ultra-thin manual-winding movement derived from the Frédéric Piguet 21 and bearing the double Geneva Seal.
The sunburst champagne dial is of absolute purity: no small seconds, no date, only baton hour markers and two gold hands.
The certificate states that the watch left the manufacture in 1976 and was sold in 1983 in Rome – seven years in a drawer that doubtless explain its exceptional state of preservation.
Fully overhauled and running perfectly, this watch is Patek Philippe Calatrava elegance incarnate, equally suited to both men’s and women’s wrists.

Detailed description

We are pleased to offer this Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 3520/00D in 18-carat yellow gold, in a remarkable state of preservation and still accompanied by its original Certificate of Identity and Guarantee, its rectangular red Patek Philippe box, and its black crocodile strap with yellow gold pin buckle – an ideal “Full Set”!

Reference 3520, introduced in 1965, occupies a pivotal place in the history of the Calatrava. It was this reference that introduced the Clous de Paris bezel – the guilloché “diamond-point” decoration that would become one of the collection’s most emblematic visual codes, taken up notably on refs. 3919, 5119, 3796D and 6119 through to the present day. At its launch, Patek Philippe presented it as “the thinnest water-resistant watch in the world” – a claim made possible by the extraordinary thinness of caliber 175, which allows the case to measure only around 5 mm thick. The 3520 would remain in the catalogue for a quarter of a century, making it one of the longest-produced Calatrava references.

Caliber 175 is an ultra-thin manual-winding movement derived from the Frédéric Piguet caliber 21 ébauche – a movement first designed in 1925 and used under various names by the most prestigious houses of Swiss watchmaking. Patek Philippe modified it to its own standards of excellence: 18 jewels, Gyromax balance, adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism and 5 positions, double Geneva Seal. Beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour, it offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. Winding it each morning is a gesture of remarkable smoothness.

The “D” in reference 3520/00D designates the Clous de Paris bezel. On our example, the guilloché decoration is in perfect condition – every point is crisp and intact. The sunburst champagne dial is of absolute purity: no small seconds, no date, only applied baton hour markers and two gold hands.

The original Certificate of Identity and Guarantee states that the watch left the manufacture in February 1976 and was initially sold in January 1983 in Rome (Italy). Seven years between production and first sale – an unusual journey that doubtless explains the remarkable condition of the piece. The example has been worn only very little since its initial sale: the dial is impeccable, the case shows no significant signs of wear and has never been polished, and the original black crocodile strap is still usable. The rectangular red Patek Philippe box, with its cream suede interior, completes a set of rare consistency.

The movement has undergone a complete overhaul by one of our experienced watchmakers and runs perfectly.
