Stemming from a collaboration project with Ferrari that never saw the light of day, the Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 5000G broke with the collection’s classic codes as early as 1992: deep black high-contrast dial, condensed Arabic numerals, off-centre small seconds between 4 and 5 o’clock. The “Ferrari” nickname, adopted by collectors, has stuck. The first and rarest of the variants, the initial white gold series is limited to around 1,000 examples. Our watch belongs to this series, as its movement number, 800’2xx, unambiguously confirms.
The Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin attests that the watch left the manufacture in January 1993 and was initially sold in February 1993 at Wempe in Frankfurt (Germany). The 33.5 mm 18-carat white gold case is in perfect condition and retains particularly crisp hallmarks behind the lugs. The glossy black dial is immaculate. The caliber 240 PS with 22-carat gold micro-rotor, bearing the Geneva Seal and freshly overhauled, is visible through the screw-down sapphire caseback.
Regarded by the brand’s leading specialists as one of the most significant modern Calatravas, and against a general backdrop of the Calatrava collection’s strong comeback, a first-series 5000G in perfect condition and accompanied by its certificate of origin represents a rare opportunity for the discerning collector.

Detailed description

In 1992, Patek Philippe introduced reference 5000, a Calatrava that broke with the collection’s classic codes. Stemming from a collaboration project with Ferrari that ultimately never saw the light of day, the 5000 borrows its aesthetic from the dashboard gauges of Italian sports cars: deep black high-contrast dial, condensed Arabic numerals, peripheral railway minute track and, above all, off-centre small seconds between 4 and 5 o’clock – a placement unprecedented at Patek Philippe that gives the watch a resolutely modern, utilitarian character. The “Ferrari” nickname, adopted by collectors, has stuck.

The very first series, limited to around 1,000 examples, and to which our example unquestionably belongs with its movement number 800’2xx, was produced exclusively in white gold – the most radical choice for a Calatrava of the period. Its success prompted Patek Philippe to offer the reference in yellow gold, then in rose gold. Total production, all metals combined, is estimated at fewer than 5,000 examples over the entire 1992-2002 decade.

To power the 5000, Patek Philippe developed a new variant of its legendary ultra-thin caliber 240: the Cal. 240 PS (Petite Seconde). Introduced in 1977 with the Ellipse d’Or ref. 3738, caliber 240 is one of the thinnest automatic movements in the world thanks to its 22-carat gold micro-rotor integrated within the very thickness of the movement. The addition of the small seconds – a first for this caliber – required the gear train to be reconfigured. The result: a movement beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, with 27 jewels and a Gyromax balance, and bearing the Geneva Seal. Visible through the sapphire caseback, the finishing is exemplary: Côtes de Genève, polished bevelling and a gold micro-rotor engraved “22K”.

The example we are pleased to offer therefore belongs to this first white gold series. The movement number 800’2xx and the Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin – bearing the manufacture code PASE (January 1993) and a sale date in February 1993 at Wempe, official Patek Philippe agent in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) – confirm that this is a piece of the very first rank. The watch is preserved in perfect condition. The black lacquered dial is immaculate, with its white Arabic numerals and matte white hands perfectly preserved. The 18-carat white gold case, measuring 33.5 mm in diameter and 7.8 mm thick, with the “claw” lugs characteristic of the reference, bears crisp hallmarks behind the lugs.

The watch comes with its Certificate of Origin, its original brown leather Patek Philippe document holder and a brown leather travel pouch. It is fitted with its original Patek Philippe black alligator leather strap, fastened by the original white gold folding clasp adorned with the Calatrava Cross in the “rectangular” format. Caliber 240 PS has undergone a complete overhaul by one of our experienced watchmakers and runs within the strictest tolerances.

The 5000 laid the foundations of an aesthetic lineage that endures in the Patek Philippe catalogue – from references 5026 and 6000 through to the 6006. Regarded by the brand’s leading specialists as one of the most significant modern Calatravas, and against a general backdrop of the Calatrava collection’s strong comeback, a first-series 5000G in perfect condition and accompanied by its certificate of origin represents a rare opportunity for the discerning collector.
