In 1952, Omega unveiled the Constellation, heir to the Centenary and the first collection dedicated to the series-produced certified chronometer; its caseback is adorned with the observatory medallion beneath eight stars, a signature echoed on the dial by a star at 6 o’clock. At the top of the range, the Grand Luxe, introduced in 1956, was reserved for solid gold and platinum: it crowned the De Luxe and represented the most precious work Omega was then capable of. Our reference 2930, measuring 35 mm, stands out for its “hooded” lugs and its rose gold, considerably rarer than yellow gold. Its case, stamped with the Geneva Key No. 4, comes from the workshops of Antoine Gerlach – to whom Patek Philippe entrusted, as early as 1932, the first gold and platinum Calatrava cases.
Our example, produced circa 1956 (serial number 156xxxxx), features a superb rose gold “Pie-Pan” dial, vertically brushed at the centre and enhanced with polished striations along the edges, punctuated by broad faceted arrowhead applied hour markers. Its chronometer-certified caliber 505 – 24 jewels, 19,800 vibrations per hour – has undergone a complete service by one of our experienced watchmakers.
It is presented on a matte chocolate alligator leather strap fastened by an Omega pin buckle in 18K rose gold, and comes with our Steel Warranty Card.
Exceedingly rare in this rose gold configuration, this Constellation Grand Luxe embodies the pinnacle of 1950s Omega watchmaking. Collectors will recognise it at once: this is a rare opportunity.

Detailed description

In 1952, Omega unveiled the Constellation, direct heir to the Centenary launched four years earlier for the brand’s centenary – its first chronometer-certified automatic wristwatch. The ambition was unprecedented: to turn the certified chronometer, until then reserved for observatory competitions, into series production. The caseback bears its manifesto: a medallion stamped with the dome of an observatory beneath eight stars, in homage to the brand’s precision records, a signature echoed on the dial by a star at 6 o’clock.

At the top of the collection, Omega introduced the Grand Luxe in 1956: reserved for solid gold and platinum, fitted with a gold dial, it crowned the De Luxe and represented the most precious work the house was then capable of. Our reference 2930, measuring 35 mm – a generous diameter for the period – stands out for its “hooded” lugs, which envelop the strap attachment, and for its rose gold, considerably rarer than yellow gold on this reference.

The case bears, stamped into its back, the Geneva Key No. 4: that of Antoine Gerlach, a Geneva case maker founded in 1871, to whom Patek Philippe entrusted, as early as 1932, the first gold and platinum Calatrava cases, and which remained one of its major suppliers throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Our Grand Luxe thus comes from the same workshops as the first Calatravas.

The example we are pleased to offer, produced circa 1956 (serial number 156xxxxx), features a superb rose gold “Pie-Pan” dial – whose sloping sides evoke an upturned pie dish – vertically brushed at the centre and enhanced with polished striations along the edges, punctuated by broad faceted arrowhead applied hour markers and the star at 6 o’clock; rose gold Dauphine hands complete it. Beneath the medallion caseback beats the caliber 505, chronometer-certified and adjusted to five positions and temperature: 24 jewels – even in the rotor bearings – and 19,800 vibrations per hour. It has undergone a complete service by one of our experienced watchmakers.

Condition

This Omega Constellation Grand Luxe is preserved in excellent overall condition.
The 35 mm case, unique to this model and featuring broad lugs known as “Hooded Lugs”, is superb. The hallmarks on the lugs are all preserved. The caseback retains all of its engravings, perfectly legible, as well as the Omega observatory medallion.
The gold dial is also remarkable. The interplay of textures, reliefs and light reflection is impressive. A very small spot of superficial oxidation is visible under a loupe, around 2 o’clock – in no way detracting from the pleasure of everyday wear. The original Dauphine hands, also in solid gold, are in excellent condition. The domed Plexiglas crystal bears the Omega crown engraved at its centre.
The automatic mechanical movement, chronometer-certified Omega caliber 505, has undergone a complete service by one of our experienced watchmakers and runs within the strictest tolerances.
A remarkable example of a rare and fascinating reference.
