We are delighted to present this superb and exceptionally rare Art Deco rectangular Omega in solid 0.925 silver, produced circa 1929.
It features a very large case for the period, all four sides of which are adorned with a hand-engraved braided laurel-leaf motif – still perfectly crisp a century later.
The silver dial, patinated to a cream tone, is superbly preserved, with its Art Deco Arabic numerals, railway minute track and small seconds at 6 o’clock. All the markings are engraved and enamelled (a so-called “indelible” dial) rather than painted, and are topped by a pair of blued steel pear-shaped hands.
The manual-winding Omega caliber 26.5 movement has been serviced and is in working order.
We commissioned the Atelier du Bracelet Parisien to make a made-to-measure camel pigskin strap, stitched directly around the fixed bars.
A century-old piece with its charm intact and a surprisingly modern presence on the wrist.

Detailed description

In the late 1920s, the wristwatch broke free once and for all from the legacy of the pocket watch. Round cases gave way to new shapes – rectangular, tonneau, cushion – known as “shaped watches”. This was the Art Deco era, and the Swiss manufactures vied with one another in creativity to offer their clientele timepieces that were also items of adornment. The example we present here is an exceptional testament to that period.

What strikes first is the case: very, very large for the period. Made of solid 925 ‰ silver (sterling silver), as attested by the hallmarks struck inside the caseback – “0.925” fineness mark, standing bear of the Bern assay office, Swiss federal hallmark guaranteeing precious metals, responsibility mark and circular Omega cartouche – it is distinguished by fine hand-engraved decoration. A deeply chased braided laurel-leaf motif runs along all four sides of the bezel. The depth and sharpness of the engravings, still perfectly legible a century later, bear witness both to the quality of the original execution and to the piece’s excellent state of preservation.

The silver dial, lightly patinated to a cream tone by time, is superbly preserved and displays a typically Art Deco composition: black Arabic numerals in an expressive geometric typeface, a railway minute track drawn as an inner rectangle, small seconds at 6 o’clock, and the “Ω OMEGA” signature at 12 o’clock. The blued steel pear-shaped hands harmoniously complete this soberly elegant ensemble. The condition of the dial, all of whose markings are engraved and enamelled (and not painted – this is what is known as an “indelible” dial), is remarkable for a watch of this age: even, with no significant stains or pitting.

The manual-winding Omega caliber 26.5 T2 movement has 15 jewels and is adjusted to 3 positions. It has undergone a full service and runs well.

We commissioned the Atelier du Bracelet Parisien to make a made-to-measure camel pigskin strap, stitched directly around the fixed bars – in keeping with the case’s original configuration.

A century-old piece in an exceptional state of preservation, combining the nobility of engraved solid silver with the purity of Art Deco design, all while offering a surprisingly modern presence on the wrist.
