The Jaeger-LeCoultre E159 is the forerunner of the celebrated Geophysic E168 – same P478 caliber, same functional purpose.
Introduced in 1945 within the catalogue of the Sentier manufacture, this reference was notably chosen by the SHOM (Service Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine nationale) to equip its officers. The example offered here, a civilian model intended for the French market (with the “Fabriqué en Suisse” inscription on the dial), features a silver-cream dial that has developed a superb honey patina of remarkable uniformity. The Arabic numerals and blued-steel leaf hands retain their original radium.
Under the caseback, the P478 caliber offers a remarkable sight: gilded mainplate and bridges, Côtes de Genève, bevelled edges – a level of finishing that more than one collector deems superior to that of the Geophysic. Freshly serviced, it runs perfectly.
An embodiment of JLC’s immediate post-war savoir-faire.

Detailed description

Jaeger-LeCoultre enthusiasts are well acquainted with the celebrated Geophysic E168 and its chronometer caliber P478/BWSbr. Less known is its direct predecessor: the reference E159, fitted with the P478 caliber from which the Geophysic was evolved. Introduced in the catalogue of the Sentier manufacture as early as 1945 – the year the P478 caliber was unveiled – and produced until the early 1950s, the E159 is a watch of resolutely functional design: water-resistant steel case (the “E” in the reference standing for “Étanche”), centre seconds, Parechoc anti-shock balance protection (the “P” in the caliber), and exemplary legibility inherited from military watchmaking codes.

This military connection is not merely aesthetic. The E159 was chosen by the SHOM – the Service Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine nationale française, heir to the world’s first official hydrographic service, founded in 1720 – to equip its hydrographers and officers. SHOM examples, fitted with the same P478 caliber, rank among the most sought-after pieces in vintage JLC production. The example offered here is not a SHOM model, but a civilian example of the same reference – bearing, moreover, the “Fabriqué en Suisse” inscription on the dial, characteristic of watches destined for the French market.

The P478 caliber descends from the lineage of the 449 caliber, one of the pillars of the LeCoultre manufacture: 449 → 450 → 478. Manually wound, it beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of about 40 hours. Under the caseback, it is a remarkable sight: gilded mainplate and bridges, carefully executed Côtes de Genève decoration, finely bevelled edges – a level of finishing that leads more than one collector to consider the “base” P478 more beautiful than the BWSbr chronometer version of the Geophysic, whose decoration is paradoxically more restrained.

The example we are offering features a silver/cream dial that has developed a honey patina of remarkable uniformity – no spots, no localised discoloration, no pitting. The painted Arabic numerals retain their original luminous material (radium-based), perfectly matched to the dial’s tone. The railway minute track and the “SWISS” inscription at 6 o’clock complete a visually highly coherent ensemble. The blued-steel leaf hands, themselves filled with original radium, echo the warmth of the dial background to perfection.

The 33.5 mm steel case is in very fine condition. The snap-on caseback, vertically brushed, bears the case serial number. The movement has been fully serviced and runs perfectly. Fitted on a new navy-blue leather strap chosen to echo the deep blue of the blued-steel hands, this E159 elegantly embodies the very best of the Sentier manufacture’s savoir-faire in the immediate post-war period.

Condition

This round military-style Jaeger-LeCoultre is presented in excellent overall condition.
The case retains its original proportions and finishings, alternating between matte/brushed/satin and bright/mirror-polished surfaces. The edges are crisp.
The silver/cream dial has developed a superb, uniform and warm patina. The Arabic numeral markers and leaf hands retain their original (radium-based) luminous material, once again with a most attractive patina.
The manually-wound mechanical movement, Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber P478, has been fully serviced by one of our experienced watchmakers and runs within the tightest tolerances.
The navy-blue leather strap is brand new, as is the steel pin buckle.
An excellent example!
