An exceptional piece, this Reverso Duoface reference 270.8.54 belongs to the prestigious “Série Première” limited to just 300 pieces, bearing the number 162/300. This is the special edition with a blue dial created exclusively for the Japanese market in 1994, alongside the also extremely rare green and red/burgundy variants. Born in 1931 for British polo players, the Reverso has become one of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s most iconic creations. In 1994, the manufacturer revolutionized its Art Déco icon with the Duoface complication, transforming the reversible case into a true instrument with a dual time display.
The example on offer is striking for its condition and entirely original configuration: period-correct alligator strap in navy blue, like the second dial, and steel folding clasp. The vertical guilloché silver dial on the day side elegantly interacts with the concentric guilloché blue dial on the night side, the latter revealing luminescent markers with a uniform cream patina. The day/night indicator at 6 o'clock, the signature of the Duoface complication, allows you to follow a second time zone with exemplary readability.
The hand-wound Caliber 854, with its 180 components and 45-hour power reserve, is a testament to Jaeger-LeCoultre's technical mastery. For the discerning collector, this numbered Japanese "Série Première" represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the first 300 examples of this exclusive variant, a foundational piece of the Reverso's modern identity.

Detailed description

Created in 1931 for British officers playing polo in India, the Reverso quickly became one of the most iconic wristwatches in watchmaking history. Its reversible case, patented by René-Alfred Chauvot, remains, more than 90 years after its creation, a symbol of Art Déco elegance. While the Reverso has survived – not without interruption – through the decades while retaining the essentials of its original design, it was in 1994 that the Sentier-based manufacturer offered its most significant revolution, with the introduction of the Duoface complication.

This Duoface transforms the very concept of reversibility: it is no longer simply a matter of protecting the dial with a solid back, but of offering two distinct time displays powered by a single movement. This technical innovation, which requires a complex set of additional gears to transmit information on both sides, marks a significant step in the evolution of the Reverso and contributes greatly to its popularity, which is still very real today – almost 100 years after the presentation of the first model.

The example we are offering belongs to the prestigious “Série Première”, limited to 300 pieces as evidenced by the engraving “N°162/300” on the case back. This inaugural edition of the reference 270.8.54, produced at the model’s launch in 1994, represents the very first examples of the Duoface complication. More specifically, this blue dial version is one of the special editions created exclusively for the Japanese market, alongside the equally rare green and burgundy red variants, each produced in just 300 pieces. These Japanese editions are today among the most sought-after Duoface models, their geographically limited distribution and exclusive colorways making them particularly desirable collector’s items on the international market. Thirty years later, these numbered pieces are sought after by collectors who see them as the starting point of a lineage that has become essential in the Reverso collection.

The caliber 854 that powers this Duoface is a sophisticated evolution of the base caliber 844. With its 180 meticulously assembled components, it not only allows the display of two distinct time zones, but also guarantees remarkable precision thanks to its frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The slimness of the movement (only 3.8 mm thick) is a testament to Jaeger-LeCoultre's exceptional expertise in creating complex yet elegant calibers.

The "day" side features a silver dial with a distinctive vertical guilloché pattern, painted Arabic numerals, and blued steel hands. This classic interpretation directly evokes the original Art Deco spirit of 1931. The small seconds at 6 o'clock adds a subtle touch of animation and perfectly balances the composition.

On the “night” side, the deep blue dial reveals a hypnotic concentric guilloché pattern, centered on the 24-hour day/night indicator. The luminescent (tritium-based) hour markers, having developed a particularly attractive, even cream patina, bear witness to the piece’s neo-vintage charm while retaining their function. This night side, with its luminescent Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, offers a striking contrast with the daytime sobriety of the other side.

The original Jaeger-LeCoultre blue alligator strap comes with its signed steel folding clasp, a complete configuration that is appreciable for a model from the mid-1990s.

This Reverso Duoface “Série Première” represents much more than a simple double-faced watch: it embodies the moment when Jaeger-LeCoultre reinvented its icon for the modern era. For the discerning collector, it constitutes a piece that is both historically significant and extremely comfortable to wear every day, a numbered witness to the early hours of a complication that continues to define the contemporary identity of the Reverso.
