Superb and rare Patek Philippe Ellipse d'Or, reference 3738/117, produced in the late 1980s.
Featuring a deep blue “Sigma” dial and an elegant integrated yellow gold braided link bracelet, this Ellipse makes as strong an impression on the wrist today as it did when it was released more than 30 years ago of this.
This wristwatch contains an automatic movement – a first in the Ellipse collection – based on the famous and sought-after Patek Philippe 240 caliber with micro-rotor in 22-carat gold.

Detailed description

The exceptional example that we are offering today has an 18-carat yellow gold case, a very rare integrated bracelet also in yellow gold with a superb braided pattern, equipped with a jewelry clasp signed Patek Philippe and engraved a Calatrava Cross, and a deep blue dial featuring the "Sigma APRIOR" symbol at 6 o'clock, which denotes the use of gold also for the dial indexes and Dauphine hands – a feature only present in 1971 to 1995.

Particularly long, the integrated bracelet, very pleasant to wear, will suit even the strongest wrists. Its manufacturing quality is exemplary, and today unrivaled by Swiss manufacturers.

In the midst of the “quartz crisis”, Henri and Philippe Stern, the owners of Patek Philippe, decided to work on a new mechanical caliber with extra-thin automatic winding. In 1977 the Caliber 240 was born, one of the most famous and admired movements of the prestigious Swiss manufacturer.

To make the Caliber 240 so elegant, reliable and above all thin, Patek Philippe used, for the first time in its history, an eccentric micro-rotor. Made of 22-carat gold to give it the weight necessary for its good inertial rotation, this micro-rotor is integrated into the plate and thus saves considerable thickness compared to conventional automatic movements. Since then, the base caliber 240 has been adapted and used by Patek Philippe for a multitude of models, including prestigious complications: world timers, perpetual calendars, moon phase displays, etc.

The reference 3738 is widely considered the most desirable in the Ellipse collection, due to its slim case with contemporary dimensions, housing the famous and prestigious Patek Philippe self-winding caliber 240, featuring a 22-carat gold micro-rotor.

This Ellipse offers an ideal combination of elegance, timeless prestige, watchmaking technicality and everyday comfort.
Add this exceptional model to your collection to demonstrate an elegance that transcends trends.

The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse

The Ellipse is a symbol of luxury and elegance.

Launched in 1968, the Patek Philippe Ellipse d'Or/Golden Ellipse collection is a remarkable fusion of simplicity and sophistication. Inspired by the principles of divine proportion, also known as the golden ratio, this series demonstrates how sleek design can transcend time while retaining timeless elegance and unique aesthetic harmony. The elliptical shape of the watch, which lends its name to the collection, is directly inspired by this ideal mathematical proportion, reputed to represent perfect balance and beauty in nature and the arts. The distinctive Ellipses case, neither completely round nor completely rectangular, offers a refined alternative to traditional watch shapes.

Over the years, the Ellipse collection has undergone many variations – in terms of size, dial colours and complications – but all have retained the integrity of the original design. The dials, in sober tones such as deep blue, black and golden/champagne, are marked by their simplicity, with discreet hour-markers and complemented by pared-down hands that underline the watch's intrinsic elegance.

The collection not only set a new standard in watch design but also proved Patek Philippe's ability to innovate without detaching itself from its heritage. Each piece in the Ellipse collection is the result of meticulous craftsmanship, reflecting the brand's commitment to excellence and understated luxury.

Today, the Ellipse remains one of the brand's most distinctive collections, admired for its unique design and timeless elegance. It symbolises luxury that never goes out of fashion, and continues to attract collectors and watch lovers who appreciate its finesse and exceptional design. At Watches & Wonders in April 2024, Patek Philippe even announced the reintroduction of an Ellipse model with an integrated bracelet in rose gold.
