“The Geomatic is the precise and elegant assistant of tasteful men”.
This is how a Jaeger-LeCoultre advertisement from the 1960s described this historic model from the prestigious Swiss watchmaker.
Introduced in 1962, a year after the discontinuation of the legendary Geophysic, the Geomatic is one of the most famous and sought-after models of Jaeger-LeCoultre's history.
Elegant at first glance, the Geomatic in yellow gold was produced in only about 1,000 pieces between 1962 and 1968.
Having become extremely rare, we are delighted to offer an exceptionally fine example of reference E 398, sold in 1968 and what's more, still accompanied by all its original accessories and documents!

Detailed description

The 36mm case of this rare Geomatic, in 18-carat yellow gold, is complemented by a sunrayed silver domed dial set with gold faceted indexes and a date window, on which rests a set of thin, luminescent hands typical of the model, all protected by a curved plexiglas crystal.

Developed to be one of the most reliable automatic watches of its time, the Geomatic, produced between 1962 and 1968, is equipped with the K881B Rotor caliber, certified as a chronometer by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) with “Especially good results” mention. This very high quality movement boasts 23 jewels, a central seconds hand, a date window at 3 o'clock, a micrometric adjustment screw, instantaneous date jump at midnight, and the innovative stop-seconds function, which allows the wearer to stop the seconds hand and precisely set the time. All these features have sparked the admiration of prestigious and collectible watches' enthusiasts for over 60 years.

The Geomatic medallion in gold, finely engraved on the case back screwed to the back of the case, is in perfect condition and testifies to the importance that the famous Sentier manufacture gave to this model.

We are delighted to offer this example accompanied by an exceptional “set”:
- Extremely rare original Jaeger-LeCoultre blue box presenting the gold Geomatic medallion;
- Original guarantee paper showing the serial number of the watch and reporting an initial sale on December 17, 1968 at Au Bouquet d'Or, official Jaeger-LeCoultre retailer in Paris (France);
- Extremely rare Geomatic booklet presenting all the specificities of this watch to the owner;
- and Blue leather guarantee holder again presenting the golden Geomatic medallion.

At 36mm, the contemporary diameter of this Geomatic allows it to be worn today in all circumstances for discreet and versatile elegance. Completely overhauled in spring 2024, the chronometric performance of this watch is exemplary. During this process, the plexiglass crystal and the leather strap were also replaced with new ones for greater wearing confort and style.

In early 2023, Jaeger-LeCoultre presented its “The Collectibles” initiative aimed at highlighting some of the most important models in the manufacture's history. An example similar to ours sold for €30,000 upon its release.

In conclusion: a historically important watch, from one of the most prestigious houses in Swiss watchmaking, of exceptional quality, wonderfully preserved since its birth 50 years ago, and accompanied by an impressing set of accessories that make this a rare opportunity for collectors.

Condition

This rare Geomatic has been particularly well preserved and is presented today in very good overall condition.
Well-defined yellow gold case, the demarcations between the polished and satin-finished surfaces remain sharp, some impacts and scratches from use.
Very deep Geomatic planetary medallion on the caseback, most certainly never polished.
The JL crown shows no damage or dents.
Entirely original sunrayed silver dial, never restored and in very good condition, some pitting and micro-scratches not altering the inscriptions, with faceted yellow gold indexes. Luminescent dots at the end of the tritium-based indexes, some of them eroded.
Original golden hands, typical of the model, luminescent material (tritium) in perfect condition with homogeneous patina.
Very well preserved original box and documents.
