Produced from 1962 to 1989, the reference 5513 is an icon among vintage Submariners. This 1977/1978 example features a rare and sought-after matte dial known as the "Maxi Mark 1," where the depth is indicated in feet first (660 ft = 200 m). As expected on this variant, whose oversized hands and hour markers are filled with patinated tritium, luminescence is no longer visible under UV-A light.
The case is very well preserved, with well-defined chamfers. The bezel insert features relatively bold lettering and an anthracite patina that complements the deep gray of the dial. The Rolex Oyster steel bracelet, reference 93150, with 580 end pieces and VB buckle code (produced in 1977), is fitted with the typical Submariner diving extension, engraved "PATENTED".
Fully serviced by an experienced watchmaker and operating to the strictest tolerances, this 5513 Maxi Mark 1 embodies the DNA of vintage professional Rolex watches.

Detailed description

The world of watchmaking has never been the same since Rolex launched the first Submariner in 1953. It is now considered a benchmark for all types of collectible watches and has since served as inspiration for countless other sports models. The Rolex Submariner, one of the most iconic and desirable watches of all time, has been worn by countless personalities – from the worlds of diving, the arts, science, and politics. To name just a few: Sean Connery in Dr. No, Steve McQueen, Robert Redford, Alain Delon, Jacques Cousteau, Eric Clapton, Rafael Nadal, and even Che Guevara!

At Amplitude, we are fascinated by the Rolex Submariner. Of all the models produced, one vintage reference captures our attention more than any other: the 5513. Rolex produced the 5513 from 1962 to 1989. During these 27 years of production, numerous dial designs were introduced. These are traditionally divided into three main categories: lacquered/gilt dials, matte dials, and finally, glossy dials with white gold-rimmed hour markers, which were introduced at the end of production. Among the matte dials, the collector community has identified nine variations, within which lies a group of five known as the "Maxi Dials." The first of these five variations, the "Maxi Mark 1," is particularly desirable and is the one we are pleased to present.

Indeed, the Maxi Mk I dial is the last variant in which the word "SUBMARINER" is inscribed below the depth gauge line. Furthermore, the tritium dots are particularly large, "oversized" compared to previous dials. This distinctive graphic feature lends a particularly balanced appearance to this 5513 and contributes to its overall feeling of timeless "purity": only two lines of text at 6 o'clock, no date window, a characteristic domed crystal, a robust case, and a highly reliable movement.

Our 5513, produced in 1977/1978, features a superb matte black "Maxi Mark 1" dial. Over time, the luminescent material on the hour markers and hands has developed a beautiful, even eggshell patina. The case is well-preserved, with wide, well-defined chamfers. The stainless steel Oyster bracelet, reference 93150, with 580 end links, suits it perfectly. In excellent overall condition, comparable models are now difficult to find. This watch exudes a special warmth and presence on the wrist. It embodies the DNA of professional Rolex better than any other. Fully serviced by an experienced watchmaker, this Submariner 5513 Maxi Mark 1 is a rare opportunity for all enthusiasts.
