We present a superb example of the Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz in steel, produced in 1982.
Launched in the late 1970s, the Oysterquartz collection is the result of many years of research and development by Rolex, aimed at combining the reliability of a quartz movement with the robustness and classic aesthetics of the celebrated Datejust line.
The black dial of our watch is particularly striking. Over the years, the luminous material of the markers and hands has developed a superb uniform pumpkin patina, providing visual warmth and an unmistakably vintage charm.
The case (36 x 42 mm) and bracelet are perfectly preserved, with sharp, wide polished chamfers/bevels, contrasting ideally with the brushed/satin-finished surfaces.
In our opinion, our Oysterquartz is the finest example currently available in the market. It is both functional and iconic, and will look equally at home in a collection of vintage watches as on the wrist of a discerning connoisseur.

Detailed description

Launched in the late 1970s, the Oysterquartz collection is the result of many years of research and development by Rolex, aimed at combining the reliability of a quartz movement with the robustness and classic aesthetics of the celebrated Datejust line.

The 36 mm stainless steel case, characteristic of the Oyster line, boasts sharp edges and brushed finishes that give the watch a modern, resolutely masculine look. The smooth bezel adds a touch of sobriety and elegance, in perfect harmony with the Rolex 17000B bracelet extending the style of the case, also in stainless steel, which ensures comfortable and secure wear.

The black dial of our watch is particularly striking. Over the years, the luminous material of the hour markers and hands has developed a superb, uniform pumpkin patina, providing visual warmth and an unmistakably vintage charm. This now-orange tritium provides a magnificent contrast with the dark base of the dial. This patina is the result of a natural ageing process, sought after by collectors for its authenticity and uniqueness.

Beneath the dial, the watch is powered by the quartz caliber 5035, a technical feat for its time. This movement, manufactured in-house by Rolex, is renowned for its exceptional precision and reliability, making the Oysterquartz a watch that combines cutting-edge technology with classic aesthetics. The calibre 5035 is also distinguished by a distinctive clicking sound during the instantaneous date change, a technical feature that testifies to Rolex's attention to detail.

Both the original case and bracelet are in excellent condition, with sharp, wide bevels/chamfers, clear delineations between the brushed/satin-finish and mirror-polished surfaces, zero-stretch links and a fully functional clasp.

The Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz 17000 is a watch that stands out both for its technical innovation and for its bold, elegant design. With its patinated black dial and exceptionally preserved condition, our example is an excellent example of the best that the Oysterquartz collection has to offer. In our opinion, our Oysterquartz is the finest example currently available in the market. It is both functional and iconic, and will look equally at home in a collection of vintage watches as on the wrist of a discerning connoisseur.

Condition

When we purchased this Rolex Oysterquartz, it had never been polished since its birth in 1982. We chose to entrust it to an expert polisher to remove scratches from use, while preserving all the material possible. The result: a case and a long bracelet in exceptional condition. Oysterquartz cases are very sensitive to poor polishing, and get "rounded" if badly handled. Here, we present wide and clean chamfers, as envisionedr by the Oysterquartz' designers. The separations between the brushed/satin and mirror-polished surfaces are perfectly clear. The engravings on the back of the case, including the reference and the serial numbers, are very well preserved and effortlessly readable.
The original bracelet is in excellent condition, with tight links and a fully functioning clasp.
This watch features a superb deep black dial whose dots of luminescent material have, like the tritium rectangles at the tip of the hands, developed a magnificent orange/pumpkin patina that is warm and uniform.
The quartz movement functions perfectly and, during the maintenance we carried out on the watch, was fully checked and its battery replaced with a new one.

The Rolex Datejust: A Heritage of Innovation and Elegance

Introduced in 1945 to mark Rolex's 40th anniversary, the Datejust was the first automatic watch to feature a date window that “jumped” instantly at midnight. This innovation, as so often in Rolex history, transformed the watch industry and set a new standard for convenience and functionality.

Over the decades, the Datejust has benefited from various improvements while retaining its characteristic appearance and pioneering spirit. With its instantly recognizable date window, enlarged by a Cyclops magnifier patented in the 1950s, the Datejust combines practicality and prestige, making it one of the most versatile and celebrated models in the Rolex family.

The universal appeal of the Datejust lies in the diversity of its executions and their timelessness – available in a multitude of sizes, materials and dial configurations, each piece offers something unique while respecting Rolex's stylistic canons and rigorous technical standards. Whether crafted in stainless steel or in precious metals, featuring simple markers or elaborate diamond settings, each Datejust is designed to stand the test of time, both in terms of style and of mechanical reliability.

Rolex has continually adapted the collection to meet the evolving tastes of its clientele, notably by introducing the Datejust II and Datejust 41 models, which are larger and heavier than the references produced to date.

The Datejust is not just a watch; it's a piece of heritage that has graced the wrists of the world's greatest leaders, visionaries, artists and celebrities, making it a symbol of success and achievement across generations. Let's only name a few of its wearers: Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr, the Dalai Lama, Roger Federer, Jennifer Aniston, Paul Newman, Michael Jordan, Bill Clinton, Tom Cruise, Rihanna, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, Jacques Chirac, Pope John Paul II, and even Mao Zedong!

Today, the Rolex Datejust, a true “blue chip watch” with timeless style, is the ideal entry point for anyone wishing to discover the world of vintage watch collecting, while still being wearable on a daily basis.
