We are pleased to present this Rolex GMT-Master II reference 16710 “Pepsi” in steel, produced in 2000-2001 (serial number P96xxxx) and in excellent overall condition.
Launched in 1955 at the request of Pan American World Airways, the Rolex GMT-Master reads two time zones thanks to its fourth hand and its 24-hour graduated bezel; the GMT-Master II of 1982 adds an independently adjustable hour hand. The reference 16710, produced from 1989 to 2007, offers all the strengths of “modern” Rolex models: a 40 mm Oyster case with satin-finished lugs, a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, durable steel, high water resistance, a particularly reliable chronometer-certified caliber 3185, a quickset date and a robust bracelet. With it, the era of the aluminium bezel came to an end: ceramic arrived in 2005 (in 2007 on steel models), and the Pepsi would not return in steel until 2018.
Our example features an original “SWISS MADE” dial, solid end links, lugs that are still drilled – a feature dropped in 2003 – and above all an original “Pepsi” insert whose red has evenly faded to a remarkably attractive orange-pink: this is the so-called “Faded” patina sought after by many collectors, which gives this watch an unmistakable vintage charm. The caliber 3185 has been fully serviced by one of our experienced watchmakers and runs perfectly; its water resistance has also been checked.
We present this watch on its original Oyster bracelet ref. 78790A; it is delivered in a green Rolex suedette pouch and accompanied by our Steel Warranty Card.
The last GMT-Master II “Pepsi” with an aluminium insert, graced with a “Faded” insert of the kind we love. A “neo-vintage” GMT-Master, ideal for everyday wear as well as for crossing time zones.

Condition

This GMT-Master II reference 16710 has been preserved in excellent overall condition.
The case band shows crisp delineations between the matte satin/brushed and the shiny mirror-polished surfaces, and sharp chamfers.
The original black lacquered “SWISS MADE” dial is perfect, and its white-gold-ringed hour markers and hands, both luminescent (Super-LumiNova-based), are intact beneath the sapphire crystal and its Cyclops lens; the original “Pepsi” insert has retained a vivid blue, while its red has evenly faded to orange-pink – the so-called “Faded” patina sought after by many collectors.
The automatic mechanical movement, chronometer-certified Rolex caliber 3185, has been fully serviced by one of our experienced watchmakers, and operates to the strictest tolerances; its water resistance has also been checked.
The original Rolex Oyster bracelet in steel, reference 78790A with solid end links, buckle code DE6 (produced in June 2001), is in very good condition, and the coronet stamped on the clasp is perfectly crisp.
The watch is delivered with a green Rolex suedette pouch and accompanied by our Steel Warranty Card.

The Rolex GMT-Master: Combining Innovation, Sportiness and the Elegance of Travel

Introduced in 1954, the Rolex GMT-Master was the result of a collaboration between Rolex and Pan American World Airways, one of the leading airlines of the time. It was designed to meet the needs of airline pilots who, with the rise of transcontinental air travel, needed a watch capable of managing several time zones simultaneously. This emblematic model quickly gained in popularity, not only among aviators, but also among travellers and professionals around the world.

Its innovative multi-time-zone display is achieved by an additional 24-hour hand that completes one revolution of the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a 24-hour graduated rotating bezel. This feature allows users to simultaneously read the time in two different time zones – and even, in the case of the most modern models, in three.

Over the decades, the GMT-Master has undergone numerous evolutions, both technical and stylistic. The introduction of the GMT-Master II in 1983 marked the advent of the ability to set the hour hand independently of the 24-hour hand. This function further enhanced the watch’s versatility, allowing GMT wearers to easily consult the time in three time zones.

Aesthetically, the GMT-Master is famous for its coloured bezels, the most celebrated being the ‘Pepsi’ (blue and red), the ‘Coke’ (red and black) and the ‘Batman’ (blue and black), which are not only practical but also highly attractive. These bold designs, combined with Rolex’s robustness and reliability, have made the GMT-Master a must-have in the world of prestige and collector’s watches.

Technically, the GMT-Master has always been equipped with high-precision self-winding mechanical movements and is designed to withstand the pressures of frequent air travel.

The main differences between the GMT-Master references (I and II) concern the glass (plexiglass or sapphire), the setting of the 24-hour hand (independent or not), the type of dial (lacquered, matte or shiny with hour markers surrounded by white gold) and the material of the case, bezel and bracelet (stainless steel, all-gold, gold and steel). The main references for steel are, in the order of their introduction: 6542, 1675, 16750, 16700, 16760, 16710, 116710, and 126710.

Today, the Rolex GMT-Master remains one of the most sought-after and respected watches in the world, symbolising adventure and prestige. It has also been worn by many influential personalities and celebrities over the years, contributing greatly to its iconic status. These include Che Guevara, Howard Hughes, Tom Selleck, Marlon Brando, Clint Eastwood, John Travolta and Pablo Picasso. Today, it continues to appeal to new generations of international professionals and urban explorers, remaining a benchmark in traveller’s watches, with a rich history and unrivalled functionality.
