Patek Philippe introduced the reference 3748 in 1976, replacing the first model in the Golden Ellipse/Ellipse d’Or collection – the reference 3548, unveiled in 1967. The 3748 remained in production until 1994.
The deep blue sunburst/soleil gold dial of our example, known as a “Mark 3” variant, contrasts beautifully with the white of the case and bracelet. The indexes and hands are also in white gold, as revealed by the presence of two “σ” symbols (Sigma APRIOR) at 6 o’clock on the dial – a feature only present from 1971 to 1995.
The oval case without visible lugs, typical of the collection, houses the famous Patek Philippe caliber 215, a mechanical hand-wound movement, introduced in the 1970s and still in production to this day. The caliber 215 features the patented Gyromax balance and a high beating speed of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Very thin, the movement that powers our watch has a high-quality finish, has been adjusted in 5 positions, and is decorated with the traditional Côtes de Genève.
The long integrated white gold bracelet, very comfortable to wear and of exemplary manufacturing quality, features a braided pattern whose matte appearance beautifully contrasts with the brilliance of the case. It boasts a jewellery clasp signed Patek Philippe and bearing a medallion engraved with the Calatrava Cross.
Patek Philippe produced considerably fewer Golden Ellipse models in white gold than in yellow gold. Our watch is an ideal combination of elegance, timeless prestige, watchmaking expertise and everyday comfort. A rare opportunity to acquire a model in wonderful condition, fully serviced by our experienced watchmakers, and that makes as strong an impression on the wrist today as it did when it was released almost 50 years ago.

The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse

The Ellipse is a symbol of luxury and elegance.

Launched in 1968, the Patek Philippe Ellipse d’Or/Golden Ellipse collection is a remarkable fusion of simplicity and sophistication. Inspired by the principles of divine proportion, also known as the golden ratio, this series demonstrates how sleek design can transcend time while retaining timeless elegance and unique aesthetic harmony. The elliptical shape of the watch, which lends its name to the collection, is directly inspired by this ideal mathematical proportion, reputed to represent perfect balance and beauty in nature and the arts. The distinctive Ellipses case, neither completely round nor completely rectangular, offers a refined alternative to traditional watch shapes.

Over the years, the Ellipse collection has undergone many variations – in terms of size, dial colours and complications – but all have retained the integrity of the original design. The dials, in sober tones such as deep blue, black and champagne, are marked by their simplicity, with discreet hour-markers and complemented by pared-down hands that underline the watch’s intrinsic elegance.

The collection not only set a new standard in watch design but also proved Patek Philippe’s ability to innovate without detaching itself from its heritage. Each piece in the Ellipse collection is the result of meticulous craftsmanship, reflecting the brand’s commitment to excellence and understated luxury.

Today, the Ellipse remains one of the brand’s most distinctive collections, admired for its unique design and timeless elegance. It symbolises luxury that never goes out of fashion, and continues to attract collectors and watch lovers who appreciate its finesse and exceptional design. At Watches & Wonders in April 2024, Patek Philippe even announced the reintroduction of an Ellipse model with an integrated bracelet in rose gold.
