Piaget Polo “Medium Size” in Yellow Gold & Black Onyx Dial, Ref. 8673, circa 1980

This Piaget Polo collection was launched in 1979 by Yves Piaget. Produced during the 1980s, our example of the reference 8673, with its 31 mm diameter, offers a unisex diameter, positioned between the purely feminine (27 mm) and so-called « Jumbo » masculine (34 mm) references of the range.
The fully satin-finished/brushed 18-carat yellow gold case features the Polo line's signature monobloc construction. The deep black onyx dial, crossed by three polished vertical gold gadroons, creates a striking graphic contrast – the visual signature of this specific configuration. The faceted gold Dauphine hands complete this refined 1980s aesthetic.
The ultra-thin Piaget 857P quartz caliber powers this creation, a development of the revolutionary 7P from 1976. The remarkably well-preserved example we offer retains its original surfaces intact, as well as its black crocodile strap and its yellow gold Piaget pin buckle, the design of which echoes the motifs on the dial.
With fewer than 6,000 Polos produced across all references between 1979 and 1990, this 8673 with its onyx dial represents a rare opportunity.

The Piaget reference 8673 belongs to the Polo collection, launched in 1979 under the leadership of Yves Piaget, the fourth generation of the founding family. This collection responded to the changing lifestyle of Piaget's international clientele, who wanted a watch suited to a more relaxed lifestyle while retaining the codes of watchmaking luxury.

This reference 8673, produced during the 1980s, represents an evolution of the initial design. With its 31 mm diameter, it is positioned between the very feminine reference 761 (27 mm), and the so-called Jumbo masculine 7661 (34 mm), offering a particularly versatile intermediate/unisex size. The round case in 18-carat yellow gold, entirely satin-finished/brushed, features this characteristic monobloc construction where case and lugs form an inseparable whole – a technical approach that required specific goldsmithing expertise.

The black dial, crossed by three vertical golden gadroons, constitutes the visual signature of the Polo model in this configuration. These polished golden lines create a graphic contrast with the black onyx background and recall the horizontal gadroons that adorned the integrated bracelets of the first models. The faceted gold Dauphine hands underline the dressy character of this creation.

The movement is the Piaget caliber 857P, a development of the 7P, which was, at its introduction in 1976, the thinnest quartz movement in the world at 3.1 mm thick. At that time, adopting a quartz movement for a luxury watch was still a conscious technical choice – Piaget was among the first manufacturers to integrate this technology into its prestige collections, demonstrating that modernity and luxury were not incompatible.

The offered example is in remarkable condition. The case retains its original satin-finished surfaces with clean edges. The screw-down caseback displays perfectly clear reference and serial numbers.

The watch is still fitted with its original Piaget black crocodile leather strap and its original Piaget 18-carat yellow gold pin buckle, the design of which echoes the motifs on the dial.

Total Polo production between 1979 and 1990 is estimated at fewer than 6,000 pieces across all references, making them relatively rare watches on the current market. This reference 8673, in this well-preserved condition and featuring a black onyx dial whose deep black contrasts beautifully with the yellow gold, represents a superb opportunity.
