Founded in 1858, and the first of the major jewelers to establish itself on Place Vendôme in 1893, Boucheron has successfully translated its aesthetic language to watchmaking. The Carrée, conceived in the 1960s and 1970s, embodies an architectural and geometric vision: a subtly faceted square case, blending satin-finished surfaces and polished lugs and bezel to create a particularly captivating play of light.
This ultra-thin 18-carat rose gold timepiece features a brushed gold dial, punctuated with black painted baton hour markers and the understated Boucheron signature. The discreet lugs, the crown set with a blue cabochon, and the patented sliding bracelet system all contribute to its overall jewelry-inspired character.
The legendary ultra-thin caliber, based on the Frédéric Piguet 21, one of the thinnest manual-winding movements ever produced, has been serviced by a specialist watchmaker and runs beautifully. A watch of unmistakable French chic, which we at Amplitude° simply had to add to our collection!

Detailed description

At the intersection of watchmaking and jewelry, Boucheron occupies a unique place in the history of Parisian luxury. Founded under the arcades of the Palais-Royal in 1858 by Frédéric Boucheron, and the first of the great contemporary jewelers to relocate on Place Vendôme in 1893, the Maison quickly became one of the most creative and daring designers of its time. Known for its exquisite work with precious materials and volumes, Boucheron successfully translated its aesthetic language to watchmaking, giving rise to jewelry watches of instantly recognizable elegance.

Among these creations, the Carrée holds a special place. Conceived in the 1960s and 1970s, this line embodies Boucheron's architectural and geometric vision, playing on contrasts of surfaces, textures, and volumes through numerous variations. The subtly faceted square case blends satin-finished sides and a polished top/bezel to create a stunning interplay of light. Its minimalist silhouette and crisp design perfectly reflect a certain idea of Parisian elegance.

The example we are presenting, crafted entirely in 18-carat rose gold, right down to the movement's casing ring – albeit it being invisible! – perfectly illustrates this philosophy. Its case maintains sharp edges and a crisp satin finish, while the gold dial features the same brushed surface, punctuated by black painted baton hour markers and the sober Boucheron signature. The discreet lugs and the crown set with a blue cabochon contribute to the overall jewelry-like character. The bracelet has no buckle/clasp: it uses a sliding system that allows the attachment to disappear into the case lugs, a mechanism patented by Boucheron, which further enhances the watch's overall elegance.

Mechanically, this Carrée stands out thanks to its legendary ultra-thin caliber based on the Frédéric Piguet 21, one of the thinnest manual-winding movements ever produced, first introduced in 1925! Used by all the major watchmakers – notably Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Longines, Omega, Rolex, and Piaget – this movement combines Swiss technical excellence with refined aesthetics. Thoroughly serviced by one of our watchmakers specializing in vintage calibers, it now operates to the strictest tolerances.

We are delighted to see that collectors are now showing great interest in Boucheron's watch creations from the 1960s and 1970s, whose quality, rarity, and appeal deserve their full attention. A watch of unmistakable French chic, which we at Amplitude° simply had to add to our collection!

Condition

This Boucheron Carrée Extra-Plate in 18-carat rose gold is preserved in superb overall condition.
The instantly recognizable case retains its original proportions and finishes, with sharp angles and brushed/satin-finished sides, while the top of the "bezel" and the 4 thin lugs are mirror polished.
The case back is great, and all the engravings – gold hallmark, Boucheron Paris signature, and reference numbers – are deep and legible.
The typical Boucheron dial, in gold soberly topped with black painted baton indices and the signature of the Maison, is ideally preserved, never restored, without any loss of text and with a background reproducing the satin finish already seen on the case.
The original winding crown, set with a blue cabochon (microscopic chips), is in good condition.
The faceted crystal is in very good condition, without chips or scratches.
The hand-wound mechanical movement, based on the extra-thin Piguet 21, has undergone a complete overhaul by one of our watchmakers specializing in vintage calibers and operates within the strictest tolerances.
The black strap is in good condition, and the sliding closure mechanism works perfectly.
An excellent example!
